M-1 & M-2 MOTOR + FLYWHEEL KITs
MOTOR/FLYWHEEL UNITS FOR THE BEST REPOWERING POSSIBLE.

All of these kits are based on Faulhaber bell armature (coreless) motors. These motors are very different from a regular can motor and have a hollow outer bell of electrical windings rotating around a central tubular magnet with bearings in the middle of the magnet. Since the tubular armature has no steel there is no magnetic pole locking or magnetic brakeing when power is lost. The rare earth magnets give great strength and the design produces very low current draw and virtually no noise. Since the armature has very little mass, mechanism friction will quickly slow the "free wheeling" so a flywheel to add kenetic mass is attached to the back of the motor. This produces a motor unit with great slow speed starting, low top speed, super quiet running with excellent power, very low current draw and flywheel coast for smoother running. Until you see a locomotive repowered with one of these motor units run, you can not appreciate the improvement they will make.

M-1 (PHOTO) This Faulhaber 1624T9.3K motor has a FW-1608 flywheel attached on one end,FW-1908 or 2209 flywheels can be supplied upon request. The 10mm long 1.5mm shaft comes out the brush end of the motor and the flywheel is on the back end. The total unit measures .630" diameter by 1.30" long. Oil must never be applied to the shaft as the commutator (not a bearing) is inside the output shaft hole. There are no screw mounting holes so the motor case must be glued in place. I use silicone sealant for a soft (vibration absorbing) mount and SHOE GOO (sporting goods store) or GOOP (hardware, big box or builders supply store) for a firm mount if the motor position will control worm mesh. For models with more room such as the HOn3 tender drive 2-8-0s and 4-6-0s I make an M-1 with the 1908 flywheel, ask for this version.
Now that Mashima has discontinued the RM-1630, this is a much better (but more expensive) motor upgrade for larger Hallmark EBT 2-8-2s, the PFM K-27, K-28, C&S 2-8-0, RGS 4-6-0, SP #9 4-6-0, the Westside tender drive SPng 4-6-0s and K-27s and many other locomotives that used to take the 1630 can motor. The M-1 is slower, smoother, quieter and gives flywheel action in about the same length as the 1630 that had no flywheel. Price $99.95.

M-2A&B. ( PHOTO ) This Faulhaber 1319T7.7K motor has a 130615 (M-2A) or 131015 flywheel (M-2B) attached on one end (specify which you want). The 10mm long 1.5mm output shaft can have a worm pressed on (only apply pressure to the shafts, never the case) or connected to a worm shaft with our ST-15 surgical tubing. This motor/flywheel unit is an upgrade for older models with Namiki 1220 and 1230 motors (Key C-18s and C-19s). They would also be an big improvement for small models with Sagami 1225 and 1230 motors such as PSC RGS 4-6-0s and late run Key C-18s and C-19s. The coreless motor will greatly reduce the starting speed, top speed and noise level and will add smoothness and flywheel coast. Also available with the faster (17,000 rpm) 1319T17K motor. Assembly is quite easy and non-technical but a rail nipper, screw drivers, drill set and pinvise and a round and square file are required and a Dremel is very helpful. The K-3 kits require more work and skill because we have to correct several problems in the original locomotives but all the steps are fully explained.

K-1 Westside D&RGW C-16s 2-8-0 (#268 and #278 with the motor hanging out the back of the cab).
        The kit is a Faulhaber coreless motor and steel worm and mounting bracket.
K-2 Far East Distributors (Spartan Series) 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 HO or HOn3. Motor, flywheels, drive shaft
       and electrical pick-up improvements.
K-2S (Sound) Far East Distributors (Spartan Series) 4-4-0 and 2-6-0 HO or HOn3. A completely different
        kit than the K-2, this mounts the motor/flywheel in the locomotive so the tender is empty except for any electronics like DCC and or sound that you want.
K-3A Westside and Balboa (second run) T-12 4-6-0 Both of these had 30/1 3 mod gearing, a brass idler gear
        and brass "reverse worm" and coil springs on the tender truck mounting screws.
K-3B Balboa T-12 4-6-0 (first run) had 25/1 2.5 mod gearing, a white nylon idler gear and no tender truck
        screw springs.  
K-4 Balboa C-19 2-8-0 (#340) This very simple conversion replaces the open frame motor with a Faulhaber
        motor, large flywheel, new gearbox and cab interior.
K-5A and K-5B Westside NCNG#9 and SP#1 2-8-0 with idler gear. Will not fit the first run with sloping drive.
        Like our K-3 with different length legs and flywheel. boiler and backhead detail and cab roof weights.
K-6A and K-6B Westside SP #8, #9 and #18 4-6-0 with idler gear drive. Same as K-3A and K-3B with different length legs.
K-8P PFM C&S 2-6-0. The M-2B motor / flywheel is glued to the inside of the tender tank, wires run
        and the very small shaft drives the worm shaft in the locomotive.
K-9P PFM C&S 2-8-0, RGS #20 4-6-0 and SP #9 4-6-0. The M-1 motor is mated to an almost invisible drive
        shaft with a flexible universal in the tender to eliminate the operating problems these models had
        with the original drive
K-9W Westside SP #8, #9 and #18 4-6-0 with tender drive. Same as K-9P with different ball universal.
K-11B Key C&S 2-8-0#58, 60, 65 & 69 and Key C-19 (sprung SECOND RUN) & PSC 1st.run RGS
        4-6-0s (K-11A). This simple kit includes a custom delrin idler gear and Faulhaber M-2 motor/flywheel unit.
        Just press the original worm on the motor and glue the motor to the gearbox.
K-12 Westside/PSC C&S #74 & #75 2-8-0. Some of these motors have failed or run poorly. This kit fits a
        Faulhaber with flywheel to the original worm and gearbox.
K-21 Balboa and Custom Brass C-21 2-8-0. A 62-1 gearbox with Faulhaber motor and flywheel. Coming
K-25 Westside C-25 2-8-0. This conversion kit has our Faulhaber M-1 motor and flywheel Kit (see above)
        and steel worm all mounted on a screw on bracket with new custom #305 delrin idler gear and side rod
        washers to keep the paint from being scraped off wheel crank throws.
K-27 Westside K-27 "Piston Valve" and "Modern Slide Valve" versions. Our M-1 Faulhaber motor and flywheel
        fitted to be screw mounted on the gearbox trailing arm, side rod washers, extra weight, instructions to reduce
        minimum radius and shorts, add a front coupler and increase electrical pickup to 14 wheels. A real puller.
        Coming
K-28 & K-36 Westside D&RGW K-28 (K-28) and K-36 (K-36)2-8-2s. These models have undersize motors.
        These kits include our Faulhaber M-1 (motor with large flywheel(2 for K-36)) and steel worm all mounted
        on a bracket which you just screw onto the trailing arm of the gearbox. There is a front bearing on the
       K-36 worm shaft you attach to the gearbox. Both have side rod washers
K-37 Westside D&RGW K-37. This great model had an open frame motor and all brass gears. This kit includes
        our M-1 Faulhaber motor with 2 flywheeld, our #305 idler gear conversion, a new front worm bearing and
        steel worm on a hardened steel shaft and washers to keep the paint from being worn off the wheels.

CAN MOTOR BASED ECONOMY CONVERSION KITS Only a can motor will fit these models.

KE-71 Lambert C&S 2-6-0. Mashima FM-1224 can motor with flywheel, steel worm and LD-305 Delrin idler gear.

KIT + CONVERSIONS (requires work in my shop, please phone and schedule time)

KC-91 Westside /PSC C-16 #271 & #268 & #278 "HiGrade" with cab interior. The much improved
       redesign of the of the C-16 is very sought and prized. They have a Namiki coreless
        motor in the boiler, removeable cab roof and cab interior detail.
KC-92 Key C&S 2-6-0 #22. This model has a copy of the C-16 Hi Grade drive with a poor brass idler gear.
        The conversion is similar to the KC-91 plus our custom NWSL Delrin idler gear.
KC-93 & KC-94 Key C&S 2-8-0 #71 and Key RGS 2-8-0 #42. These have a similar drive with a poor quality
        brass worm and a brass idler gear, both gears and the motor are replaced.

COMPLETE DESCRIPTION
WHEN ORDERING DCC VERSIONS specify whether you will use LED or 1.5V. 15ma bulbs and whether you want intense bright or moderately bright lighting as this effects included resistor values. LED moderately bright is the default version. The DCC version is just the standard version with a DCC decoder attached to the side and hard wired to the motor with a resistor attached to power the lighting and a LED with wiring for the headlight.

K-1. The Westside C-16 ( PHOTO ) ( PHOTO ) is a well detailed model of a common and popular 2-8-0 in HOn3. This simple motor conversion with a 7400 rpm micromotor produces smooth starts and a 35 mph 12 volt speed  with some "flywheel type coast" and the motor is the same shape as a C-16 boiler and fits completely inside the cab and has boiler backhead casting included. You cut off the old motor mount down to the frame and drill one hole in the frame cross piece in front of the drawbar screw. File down the top of the frame (maybe .020" ) just behind the idler gear to clear the motor and bracket. The mesh of the included NWSL polished steel worm should be correct but can be adjusted by hand filing the back legs of the motor mounting bracket. Use 1 provided 2mm screw to mount the motor bracket and screw the drawbar screw into the 2mm nut on the motor brush lead. Test run to make sure everything runs right. File down the PSC backhead casting (included) to fit down to frame and glue to the back of the motor. Add the included weight to the cab roof, Screw on boiler and run, enjoying the finest running HOn3 loco you own. Estimated 2 hours   Price $120   K-1DCC version with a TCS back EMF decoder mounted, and instructions is $200.

K-2. The Spartan Series 2-6-0/ 4-4-0 ( PHOTO ) can be made into a truly fine running locomotive but a couple problems gave them a very bad reputation. They are the only small 2-6-0 and 4-4-0 produced in HOn3 and revised electrical pickup and a great micro motor with flywheels make them truly great running locomotives. The tender drive if properly done is not a problem and allows much more weight to be placed on the drivers. Our conversion is very simple, we grind a groove on the tender PC board and run a jumper so all tender wheels pickup off the fireman's side rail. We put a spring wire on the drawbar so that the loco transmits electricity to the tender body and the pilot wheels are made to pickup electricity. Now we have 4 wheel contact on each rail, we include a lead cab roof weights. The 7400 rpm 1319 micromotor with flywheels is siliconed to the pc board tender floor and wires from the motor connected to the tender floor. The drive shaft to the cab is an .018 wire that is almost invisible. One end of the old plastic drive shaft (which is completely inside the cab) is cut off and superglued to a collar on the front of the drive shaft with the rear in a universal joint on the front motor shaft. If you send the plastic drive shaft (packed in a slot in a piece of corrigated cardboard) to us with your order we will install it when we return the kit. If you have lost the driveshaft add $5 and we will include one installed on the shaft. Add the included cab roof weight.
You now have a very smooth and quiet running 30mph 4-4-0/2-6-0. Conversion time about 3 hours with no critical machining. Price is $125 (please specify 4-4-0 or 2-6-0 as there is one different part)     K-2DCC version with a TCS back EMF decoder mounted and instructions is $205.

        A small 2nd run of these models (including all the HO models) came with a brass tender floor and the front tender truck mounted further back on the floor. We have a revised kit with extra parts and an instruction supplement for this version, specify K-2(4-4-0 or 2-6-0)BR for this. "The PC board version is easier to convert."

K-2S (Sound). The Far East Distributors (Spartan Series) 2-6-0/ 4-4-0 are very nice size locomotives and the wheels and gearing are far better than the Ken Kidder 2-6-0 and can be made to run supurbly. I have just figured how to mount the motor/flywheel in the boiler so the tender will be empty and a sound system can be wired in. This kit requires more work to install than the K-2 kit, the top of the loco frame must be ground down flat to above the bottom edge of the boiler then a circular grove is ground down the middle of the top of the frame to fit the motor shape, it took me 30 minutes of hand grinding with a Dremel and routers and frequent test fitting of the motor.. The kit is a Faulhaber 1319 motor with a worm on the front and flywheel on the back. These are cemented on a mounting plate that has a NWSL delrin idler gear mounted under the worm, You drill a hole up through the frame for a 2 MM screw that will hold down the motor to the frame. Following the complete instructions you carefully adjust the motor fit to the frame to get perfect idler to axle gear mesh. The grinding does not have to be precice, you have to grind enough to get the motor and idler gear down for proper gear mesh but if you grind too much, just add paper shims under the motor to move the motor back up for proper mesh. then remove the motor assembly. Since the boiler and cab floor are very narrow, the motor, flywheel, idler gear and mounting bracket are inserted through the cab back then the boiler and motor are mounted down to the frame which ties all the gearing together. The tender wiring is modified the same as the K-2 kit to give 4 wheel electrical pick-up off each rail and 2 two wire TCS plugs will transmit power from the tender back to the locomotive for the motor and the LED headlight. The kit also includes sheet weights for the cab roof and inside the cab underneath the windows for better traction. Last detail is a C-16 backhead casting and a half circle of brass tube for the boiler shape inside the cab which is just wedged, glued or soldered in place. Everything above is included in the kit along with full assembly instructions.
        Even though I figure sound is the main reason to install this more complex K-2S kit, the sound system in the tender will not be part of the basic K-2S kit though I can supply these items if you want to order them as a kit supplement, lets call it the Spartan Sound kit.
        This kit has quite a few steps to install although it is not overly difficult and does not require special skills. Tools almost required are a Dremell motor tool with routers similar to #115, #124, #193 and #198, a #46 and 3/16" drill, a flat hand file, a pencil soldering iron and a Verneer or DIGITAL CALIPER is very useful but an included gauge can do this job. If you are afraid you can't assemble it, TRUST ME, YOU CAN AND AFTER YOU COMPLETE IT YOU WILL BE A BETTER MODELER and have more confidence. If you absolutely freak out after starting I can complete it but I will bill for my time and YOU MUST START IT AND GET AS FAR AS YOU CAN, BELIEVE ME, YOU CAN DO IT. Don't chicken out, you will be proud of what you do.
        The SPARTAN SOUND kit includes a micro LED headlight, Soundtraxx ECO 100 decoder (Tsunami 2 available for $40 extra), a "sugar cube" high bass speaker and a TCS Keep Alive KA-1 all wired together for easy installation and instructions that fully explain how to mount it in the tender and wire it to the motor and headlight. The time it takes me to build this kit will price the K-2S kit at $195.00. The SPARTAN SOUND kit is $ 135.00.STAY TUNED FOR RELEASE.

K-3A. The Westside and Balboa (2nd run) T-12 4-6-0 .( PHOTO ) had several gear mesh problems that caused them to make much noise and run very poorly and the brass idler gear quickly wore out the brass worm. Both production runs were made with the axle slots milled too far up in the frame which allowed the axle gear to mesh tightly with the 30 tooth idler gear and force the center driver down in the frame. The vibration caused by the tightly meshing gears caused the driver to vibrate on the track generating noise. This kit gives you a custom made 29 tooth delrin idler gear and a new pivot shaft (the old one was probably worn by the rotating brass gear) and instructions on how to adjust the gear mesh. After the wheel gauge is corrected and the siderods adjusted the loco runs very smoothly. The firebox sides are bent out slightly, most of the motor mounting plate is cut off the frame and a hole drilled up throught the frame. The included 2mm screw is run through the frame into the mount bracket of the Faulhaber "micro motor" with a flywheel and a steel worm. File adjust the two bracket legs to fine tune the worm mesh and run the drawbar wire with 2mm nut to the drawbar screw. Included are a half circle of brass and a boiler backhead casting to detail the cab interior and a lead weight for the cab roof. With the work involved to correct the problems of the original T-12, this is our most challenging kit, at least 5 hours.   Price $155      K-3ADCC version with TCS back EMF decoder mounted and wired and extra instructions     $235

K-3B The Balboa T-12 (first run) 4-6-0 has a 25 tooth white nylon idler gear which is reusable so has fewer problems to correct. After regauging the wheels and checking the siderods we fine tune the idler gear mesh. The firebox sides are bent out slightly, the vertical part of the motor mount bracket is cut out and installation proceeds as in the K-3A kit. We include custom tender truck mounting springs to improve electrical pickup, the cab roof weight and other needed parts found in the K-3A kit. K-3B  Price $135  K-3B-DCC version is $215

K-4. Balboa C-19 #340 2-8-0. ( PHOTO ) This is a very easy to install kit with a new gearbox, steel worm and new smaller delrin idler gear, Faulhaber motor with a large flywheel and boiler detail for the cab interior. No cutting required, unscrew the old gearbox and motor, mount the new motor/gearbox with the 2 old 2mm screws and feed the attached motor wire through the hole in the frame down to the drawbar location. Assemble the drawbar parts onto the terminal lug on the drawbar wire and screw this back to the frame greatly improving the look over the original design. The rear cab handrails are not attached prototypically. Drill a .024 hole vertically in the bottom outer ends of the rear cab support bracket. Cut the handrail bottom ends off the back cab wall and bend the wire ends down and into the holes (see prototype photos). Add the included cab roof weight. Time about 2 hours. Price  $150  K-4 DCC version with TCS back EMF decoder mounted and wired and special instructions     $230 "I am very pleased with the C-19 kit, installed with no problems and works like a dream!" K-5A, K-5B. The Westside SP #1 and NCNG#9 2-8-0 ( PHOTO ) Cab mounted idler gear drive only. There was at least two runs of the 2-8-0 with idler gears. The earlier run has a 25 tooth axle gear and 72 DP white nylon idler gear. This is the same drive as the first run Balboa D&RGW T-12. The last run has a 30 tooth 3 mod axle gear with a brass worm and 30 tooth brass idler gear (similar to the drive in the Westside T-12 except with reverse cut gears).I have found these drives in both SP & NCNG 2-8-0s. A proper drive requires a steel worm and a delrin 30 tooth idler gear and a quality motor, all of these needed parts are included in the K-5 kits. The complete instructions describe cuting the old motor mounting bracket off the frame, removing a little of the frame around the idler gear, drilling a hole in the driver cover plate and screwing the motor mounting plate with Faulhaber coreless motor, worm and large flywheel to the chassis and assemble the drawbar screw to the wire and 2mm nut from the motor. Assemble the backhead detail and boiler shaper and fit it around the motor and wedge it into the boiler. K-5A kits are $135 K-5A-DCC kit $215. The K-5A is identical to the K-3B with the mounting hole moved to match the driver spacing and a larger flywheel and uses the original idler gear. Our K-5B Kit (30 tooth axle gear) includes s custom 30 tooth Delrin idler gear (with a 2.5mm hole) and is $20 more than the K-5A. You must determine which gearing you have, you can't determine by having an SP or NCNG model.

K-6A and K-6B. The Westside S.P. #8, #9, & #18 4-6-0 ( PHOTO ) Cab mounted idler gear drive versions. These locomotives were done in 2 different runs with similar gearing and gear problems as the Balboa / Westside D&RGW T-12 4-6-0s and the Westside S.P. #1 and NCNG #9. The first cab drive run was done with 72 DP gearing and a 25 tooth white nylon idler gear. The last run was done with 3 mod gears and a 30 tooth brass worm and idler gear and pivot shaft. The K-6A is for the first run of the cab drive 4-6-0's and K-6B is for the last run and includes a 30 tooth delrin idler gear to cure the wear problems. Both kits have a Faulhaber 1319 coreless motor with flywheel and a steel worm mounted on the motor shafts, all mounted on a custom bracket to fit inside the boiler and be screw mounted to the loco frame. A boiler backhead casting and boiler contour plate are included to make the cab interior look correct. All parts and instructions are included. The K-3B kit is the same as the K-5A and K-6A kits, the K-3A is the same as the K-5B and K-6B, just slightly different length bracket legs, screw locations, and flywheel size. COST K-6A KIT $135 K-6A-DCC KIT $215. K-6B kits are $20 more (the idler gear).

K-8P. The PFM C&S 2-6-0, is a very common and popular model with a very small tender and motor (many were 3 pole motors). Since the tender floor is cut out it is easiest to silicone glue the Faulhaber 1319 motor and 131015 flywheel (my M-2B motor) into the underside of the tender tank with silicone sealer. Wire the motor to the tank and drawbar pin and connect the .015" custom PFM drive shaft and you have a great running 2-6-0. TEMPORARILY DISCONTINUED. I was never completely happy with this kit because the friction of the worm and the drive shaft in the bearings overpowered the small flywheel. After I get the K-2S kit out I will try to develop a version for this locomotive that will leave the tender empty and should run considerably better..

K-9P. The PFM C&S 2-8-0, RGS #20 4-6-0 and S.P. #9 4-6-0 were strong well built models with lots of weight in the hollow boiler. This kit is currently discontinued and when I have the time I will design a version of the K-2S drive that will fit the Faulhaber motor and flywheel in the boiler and leave the tender empty to allow easy installation of a DCC sound system and a Keep Alive circuit.

K-9W. The Westside S.P. #8, #9, & #18 4-6-0 with tender drive. This kit is identical to the K-9P kit except for the .121" size of the front ball universal. K-9W $120, K-9W/DCC $200

K-11A & B. Key C&S 2-8-0 #58, #60, 65 and #69 & D&RGW C-19 (sprung Second Run) and RGS #40) K-11B & PSC 1st. run RGS 4-6-0s (K-11A) with shorter flywheel for shorter boiler. ( PHOTO ) Very nice models with sprung drivers. Unfortunately the Sagami 1230 motor (1225 in RGS 4-6-0s) only allows 15 to 120 MPH speeds and the brass idler gear is noisy. We offer a full upgrade kit of a custom delrin idler gear plus a Faulhaber 1319T7.4K bell armature motor with FW-131015 flywheel as kit K-11B. Kit K-11A (for RGS 4-6-0s) comes with a FW-130515 flywheel as that is all that will fit in the shorter body. You screw the delrin idler gear in the gearbox, pull the worm off the old Sagami, mount it on the Faulhaber motor shaft, glue the motor to the gearbox motor bracket and attach the 2 wires on the motor to the loco. This conversion runs 1 to 25 mph with significant flywheel coast and virtually no noise. K-11(A or B) kit is $130, DCC kit is K-11(A or B)-DCC $210.

K-12. Westside/PSC C + S #74/75 2-8-0. ( PHOTO ) These fine models were built with a good motor that sometimes fail with age. SeeNamiki Motors. The K-12 kit substitutes a Faulhaber 1319 motor with a FW-1310 flywheel. The motor is equipped with a NWSL polished steel worm and the mounting bracket needs adjustment for perfect worm mesh. The kit is $120. For fully wired TCS BEMF DCC add $80.

K-21. Balboa and Custom Brass C-21 2-8-0. This is in development and will have a 1 piece custom built 62-1 gearbox with a Faulhaber 15,000 rpm motor with flywheels to fit right on the driver axle and power the original axle gear.

K-25. Westside D&RGW C-25. 2-8-0. ( PHOTO ) Very nice locomotive with the boiler siting high but this can be adjusted down. This full conversion kit is based on a very low speed Faulhaber M-1 Kit motor and flywheel (see above) to match the 26/1 gear ratio. All this is attached to a brass plate that you screw onto the gearbox trailing arm. Included is an improved WESTSIDE delrin Idler Gear #305 with new bearings and steel 1.5mm pivot shaft that greatly reduces friction and increases gear stability, quietness and flywheel coast. Also included are a revised pilot truck pivot to reduce derailments, and washers to keep the siderods from scraping the paint off the counterweights. Kit K-25 $150, with TCS Back EMF DCC $230.

K-27 Westside K-27 Piston Valve And Modern Slide Valve 2-8-2s. COMING This kit will upgrade this fine piece of machinery to greatly improve running and eliminate a lot of little nagging problems. Our M-1 Faulhaber motor and flywheel is fitted to be screw mounted on the gearbox trailing arm, side rod washers, extra weight, instructions to reduce minimum radius and shorts, add a front coupler and increase electrical pickup to 14 wheels. K-28. Westside K-28 2-8-2. This kit uses a Faulhaber M-1 motor and flywheel kit with a NWSL steel worm mounted on the front motor shaft, you just screw mount the motor to the old motor bracket. Price $120 With TCS Back EMF DCC decoder installed and wired to the motor $200.

K-36. for K-36 2-8-2. This kit uses a Faulhaber M-1 motor and flywheel kit with a second flywheel on the front of the motor, all mounted on a mounting plate. Drill 2 holes in the gearbox trailing arm and screw mount the motor. Mount the front bearing bracket to the front of the gearbox. Mount the worm and shaft between the front beating and the motor, coupling the shafts using the silicone coupling provided. Screw the 2mm nut soldered to a wire on the motor to the drawbar and it is installed. Also included are washers and instructions on how to keep the siderods from scraping the paint off the wheel crank throws. Price K-36 $140. With TCS Back EMF DCC decoder installed and wired to the motor $220.

K-37. Westside K-37 2-8-2. This kit is very similar to the K-36 Kit but fitted to the K-37. It also comes with our #305 "high efficiency" delrin idler gear kit (a big improvement over the NWSL #305-6). Installation requires drilling an additional hole in the gearbox trailing arm so the motor, flywheels(2) and bracket can be screw mounted. A new front worm bearing is fitted to the gearbox and the steel worm and shaft fit between it and the motor using the universal/shaft coupling provided. Install the provided washers under the middle crankpin screws to keep the side rods from scraping the paint off the wheel counterweights. K-37 Kit Price $170, K-37DCC Kit Price $250.

CAN MOTOR BASED ECONOMY CONVERSION KITS

KE-71. Lambert C&S 2-6-0. This is a very nice Japanese built small 2-6-0 that can be used as a generic engine on many different railroads and with the motor in the boiler there is room in the tender for DCC and sound. The open frame motor wasn't bad but a Mashima 1224 can motor with a 130615 flywheel runs much better. The original brass idler gear was driven by a brass worm (a poor design) and is replaced by a LocoDoc #305 custom Delrin idler gear on a steel pivot shaft with brass bearings and a NWSL steel worm mounted on the motor shaft. You just glue the motor onto the frame and solder the two motor wires to the frame and drawbar terminal lug. Price $85.

KIT + CONVERSIONS (requires work in my shop, please phone and schedule your rebuild project).

The Westside C-16 "High Grade" (this name was not put on the model boxes but is the name now used by modelers who appreciate how fine this model is). Both #268 and #278 (some by PSC) were produced with this drive and all #271's were "High Grades". The 1230 Namiki coreless motor is mounted backward in a brass collar with a worm at the back which is screw mounted in the boiler. The drivers and idler gear are mounted in the frame and when the boiler and frame are screwed together the proper gear mesh is set by the precision assembly.

KC-91. Westside /PSC C-16 "HiGrade" ( PHOTO ) with cab interior and removeable cab roof. A great model but with no flywheel action and some of the 12mm Namiki Motors have seized up or run poorly due to the factory using a lubricant that hardens with age. I have developed the KC-91 Kit + Conversion that requires you to send the boiler and old motor to my shop, I bore out the motor collar and fit in the 1319T7.4K Faulhaber motor with FW-130915 flywheel, bore the worm and mount it on the motor, clean out any wires or other tabs sticking inside the boiler (clearences are very tight), attach the wires and return it to you. KC-92. Key C&S 2-6-0 #22. ( PHOTO ) A very nice model with sprung drivers, a brass idler gear rotating on a brass shaft. I had NWSL make a replacement delrin idler gear ( KEY MODELS C&S #22 Idler Gear) that replaces the original brass gear and offer a Kit + Conversion that includes a 7400 RPM Faulhaber 1319T7.4K motor and FW-131015 flywheel to replace the original very coggy and fast Sagami 1225 can motor. Since the motor is larger in diameter than the Sagami and the motor mounts in a brass collar in the boiler, you must send me the old motor and collar, I bore it out, mount the Faulhaber and flywheel and original worm and return it to you (with the custom delrin idler gear to mount in your loco). Speed range is about 1 to 25 mph with significant flywheel coast and reduced noise. Whole package = $180, add $80 for TCS Back EMF DCC decoder mounted and wired to the motor. KC-93. Key C&S #71 2-8-0 and
KC-94 Key RGS C-17 #42 2-8-0.
A copy of the WS C-16 HiGrade drive but with poor quality brass worm and brass idler gear. The Namiki 1230 Motor frequently fails. Send the locomotive to us and we bore the collar out to install a Faulhaber 1319 bell armature (coreless) motor with a 1310 flywheel, NWSL steel worm and install it in the boiler. Since the NWSL worm is smaller in diameter than the poorly machined Samhongsa brass worm we replace, we modify the idler gearbox to raise the idler gear for proper worm mesh, install a custom Delrin idler gear and send the completely assembled model back. Since these models were built with less precision than the WS C-16, adjustments need to be made to get proper gear mesh which is critical. Speed range is about 1 to 25 mph with significant flywheel coast and reduced noise. The whole package is $200, add $80 for TCS Back EMF DCC decoder mounted and wired to the motor.
